Installing a Language Pack

This is for users who wish to install and activate a language pack

Using the Translation tab in the jDownloads Documentation & Tutorial Centre makes it very easy to add a language package to jDownloads.

Note It is essential that the normal Joomla! language package has already been installed first. That is in this example the French language for Joomla! must be already installed. No warning is given if it has not been installed.  If you need to install the Joomla! Language pack see the Addendum below.

The initial view  after selecting the Translation tab allows you to select the required jD series
Install-Lang01A

Clicking on the relevant button or title brings up a detailed view of the available languages. In this example we use the 3.2.x series.

Note that there is an automatically updated indicator for each language giving its percentage completion.

Install Lang01BB

For demonstration purposes this article shows how to install the French language. Obviously the procedure is the same for any language.

The view below shows the start of the article.

If you wish to download the language package for the currently selected language then scroll down to the foot of the page as shown below.

Then click on the 'Download Now' button.  This initiates the download.

Install-Lang01D
and you will be able to Save the file on your PC in a suitable folder.  Install-Lang01E

The next step is to use the regular Extension Manager - Install as if you were installing any extension.

Do NOT use the Install Languages tab. Now browse for the file then Upload & Install

Note It is essential that the normal Joomla! language package has already been installed first

That is in this example the French language for Joomla! must already be installed. No warning is given if it has not been installed.

If you need to install the Joomla! Language pack see the Addendum below.

Install-Lang02A

Typically you will then see messages such as below.  You now have the jDownloads Language installed

Install-Lang02B

Activating the languageInstall Lang03

In the next stage we use the Extensions - Language Manager As indicated opposite

This gives a view such as shown below.  Basically select the desired language for the front end and make it the default.  The image below shows after making French the default.

Install Lang04

You also need to repeat the proccess by selecting the Admin language. Again the view below shows the result after making French the default Admin language

Install Lang04A

Language Pack Location

For those people interested if you look at the files on your server before and after you will now find the jDownloads languages installed.

Language files exist in two locations:  <your-site>/languages and <your-site>/administrator/languages.  They are then grouped in language directories.

Adendum  - Installing a Joomla! Language package

This is quite straight forward.  For Joomla! translations go to community.joomla.org/translations and select the required series

and the the relevant language.  The need to install the Joomla! language package is because it will create the required infrastructure.

Again chooing the French language as an example

Install-Joomla-Lang01B

Clicking on the download address gives choice of all the versions as shown below.

Install-Joomla-Lang01C

Save the download as normal

Install-Joomla-Lang01D

And then as above use Extension Manager - Installation (not Languages), Upload & Install as you would for installing any extension.

And a new Joomla! language pack is in place.
