TAB: Downloads (jD3.2 and jD2.5)

The configuration TAB Downloads has the following settings:

Upload Directory Path

  • This sets the path to the main directory where uploaded files are saved. This must be entered as an absolute path. The given directory and all its subdirectories must be writable. If you wish to change this main directory then you will also need to move the contents of the main directory, please see the documentation for notes on how to do this.
  • Typical content on an Internet web site is : /home/<site name from hosting service>/public_html/jdownloads
Note: <site name from hosting service> is NOT the site-name in www.site-name.com
  • For local installations on PC using say Wamp it is of the form C:/wamp/www/mysite/jdownloads where mysite is the name of the directory in the wamp directory that contains the website.
  • The 'write' status is shown automatically by jDownloads. It should be Status: WRITABLE
  • Only change the path specified here when you know what you are doing!

  • set by default to "_uncategorised_files"

  • _preview_files "_tempzipfiles".
  • The 'write' status is shown automatically by jDownloads. It should be Status: WRITABLE

Long Date-Time format

  • Allows you to specify the default (long) Date-Time format. For details about the format please see: www.php.net. If you leave the field empty then a long standard date format from the Joomla! language file (DATE_FORMAT_LC2) will be used. Leaving blank is also recommended for multi-language websites. Alternatively you may use language specific tags here such as for example {en-GB}Y-m-d{/en-GB}.
  • For more information see International Dates & Times, and Number style

Short Date-Time format

  • Allows you to define a second, shorter Date-Time format (selectable in menu settings). If you leave the field empty then a short standard date format from the Joomla! language file (DATE_FORMAT_LC4) will be used. Leaving blank is also recommended for multi-language websites. Alternatively you may use language specific tags here such as for example {en-GB}Y-m-d{/en-GB}.
  • For more information see International Dates & Times, and Number style

Default title prefix for ZIP files

  • If multiple files are selected for downloading then they are automatically archived into a temporary ZIP file and presented to the user as a single file for download. The ZIP file name is created starting with the specified prefix and followed by a random number.

Delay (in minutes) for temporary zip file deletion

  • Indicate a value in minutes, after which the temporary created Zip files for multiple downloads will be deleted by the server. If you offer large files, then you should set a higher value. Default value: 20 (minutes)

Activate direct-download?

  • f Yes then the placeholder variable {url_download} is used to start downloading immediately without displaying further information.
  • Note: The summary page is always viewed when a user has to either (1)agree to a license, or (2) respond to a Captcha, or (3) supply a password.

Send downloads over PHP Script?

  • jDownloads normally uses a PHP Script to transmit a file. The progress of the file transfer is not shown but a completion message for success or error is shown. With very big files (a few hundred MB) it is possible that timeouts may occur. If you deactivate this option, the Download link is sent directly to the browser for it to control downloading of the Download.
  • Beware!: If this option is deactivated then you must not activate the .htaccess option in the Security section of the Configuration.

Activate log function for downloads?

  • If set to Yes then all Download activities are logged in the database.
  • Important: It is recommended that this option is always activated as some core parts of jDownloads, such as the time and number of download limits in User Groups Settings - User Group Limits, need this logged data to work properly.
  • The jDownloads module: Last Downloaded Files also requires this option to be activated. You can reduce the stored data. Check about this in the jDownloads System Module settings.

Which file types are to be opened in the Browser

  • List the file types that are opened in a new browser window rather than being just downloaded. Between each option you need a (,) separator.
    Example: html,htm,txt,pdf,doc,jpg,jpeg,png,gif

Delete images from deleted Downloads?

  • When Yes and a Download is deleted then all images, including thumbnails, for that Download are also deleted.

Delete preview files from any deleted Download?

  • When Yes and a Download is deleted then any preview file for that Download, such as a mp3 or an avi file, is also deleted.
